The new 7th Framework Programme (2007 – 2013) is organised into four main programmes:

Cooperation: Support will be given to research activities, carried out in trans-national cooperation. The sub-programme "collaborative research" will be at the centre of EU reseach funding (Collaborative projects, Networks of Excellence, co-ordination/support actions etc.)

Ideas: The newly created European Research Council (ERC) will stimulate creativity and excellence by funding 'frontier' research by individual teams.Starting independent research grants

People: Reinforced 'Marie Curie actions to support training, mobility and careers development.

Capacities of research and innovation is to be enhanced by coordinating and developing research infrastructures and by supporting regional research-driven clusters, SMEs, a closer relationship between science and society, and the development of international cooperation.

Health has been identified as one of nine thematic themes in the Cooperation programme. Particular emphasis will be put on the following activites:

Biotechnology, generic tools and technologies for human health (no longer focussed on genomics)

Translational research (translation of basic discoveries in clinical applications)

Optimising the delivery of health care to European citizen
